If you’re in Raleigh staring at dents, rust, a busted bumper, or a cracked windshield and wondering, “Can I still donate this thing?” the answer is yes. With Carolina Charities Auto, body damage does not disqualify your vehicle. Cosmetic issues, accident damage, hail or storm damage, peeling paint, or rusted panels — we’ll still arrange a free pickup and your donation will support Heritage for the Blind’s work for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Here’s how it really works in North Carolina. Your car is picked up for free anywhere in the Research Triangle — from North Hills, Five Points, and Brier Creek to Cary, Garner, Durham, or Chapel Hill — whether it runs or not. It’s then sold in its current condition; you are not expected to repair or clean it. The sale price, not how it looks, determines your actual tax deduction. Heavier body damage usually means a lower sale price, but you’re still guaranteed a minimum $500 tax receipt, and if it sells for more, you can deduct that higher amount using IRS Form 1098-C. You get simple paperwork and clear instructions at every step.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your damaged vehicle
Go online or call to share the basics: year, make, model, where the car is located around Raleigh, and the type of body damage (dents, rust, cracked windshield, accident or storm damage). Be honest about its condition—cosmetic or structural issues won’t disqualify it and help us plan the right kind of pickup.
2. Schedule your free pickup anywhere in the Triangle
We arrange a towing time that works for you, often within a few days. We pick up in Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Garner, Wake Forest, Durham, Chapel Hill and surrounding areas. The car can be in your driveway, on the street, or at a shop. It doesn’t need to run, and you don’t pay a cent for towing.
3. Hand over keys (if you have them) and title
At pickup, you’ll sign the title over to complete the donation. If the car is badly damaged and not drivable, that’s fine. Our driver will load it, even with broken glass, bent fenders, or rusted panels. You’ll receive a preliminary receipt on the spot noting that the vehicle has been accepted for donation.
4. We sell your car as-is to benefit Heritage for the Blind
Your car is sold in its current condition—no repairs by you needed. It may go to auction, a wholesaler, or for recycling if the damage is extensive. The actual sale price, even for a heavily damaged vehicle, helps fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired through Heritage for the Blind.
5. Receive your tax receipt based on real sale value
Once the vehicle sells, we mail you a final tax receipt. You’re guaranteed at least a $500 receipt. If it sells for more, your receipt reflects that higher amount, and for donations over $500, you’ll also receive the IRS Form 1098-C so you can claim the correct deduction on your federal taxes.
6. Enjoy the cleared space and peace of mind
That dented, rusted, or storm-damaged car is gone from your driveway or parking spot, at no cost to you. You’ve avoided repair and selling hassles, supported a Raleigh-area charity partner, and received documentation for a charitable tax deduction—all by donating a car that seemed too damaged to be worth anything.
Potential complications to watch for
Severe frame or storm damage may reduce the sale price
Tip: If the car has major collision damage, a bent frame, or deep flood or hail damage, it may only be worth salvage value. You can still donate it, but expect the final deduction to be closer to the minimum $500, not retail value. We’ll still handle pickup and paperwork the same way.
Missing or damaged title can delay your donation
Tip: North Carolina requires proper title transfer, even for a banged-up vehicle. If your title is lost, torn, or unreadable, you’ll need to obtain a duplicate from the NCDMV before we can complete the donation. We can guide you on what to request so your damaged car donation in Raleigh doesn’t get stuck in limbo.
Extra accessories or junk in the car won’t increase value
Tip: Leaving personal items, aftermarket rims, or old tools in a dented or rusted car won’t significantly change its sale price. Clear out belongings you want to keep before pickup. If something is permanently attached (like a roof rack), it can stay, but it rarely affects the value or your tax deduction.
Unpaid registration or inspection doesn’t block donation
Tip: An expired inspection sticker or lapsed registration—common on damaged vehicles—won’t stop your donation. However, you’re still responsible for any prior tickets or penalties. Once the title is transferred through Carolina Charities Auto, you’re no longer responsible for future property tax or registration on that vehicle.
