You do not have to renew your registration or pay back fees to donate your car in Raleigh. With Carolina Charities Auto, an expired or lapsed registration usually isn’t a problem at all. What matters most is that you have a valid North Carolina title in your name. We’ll arrange a free tow from your driveway, street, or apartment lot anywhere in the Research Triangle, and you’ll still receive a tax receipt for your donation to benefit Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s how it works in North Carolina: DMV registration and inspection are about whether your car can be legally driven on the road today. A title is what legally proves who owns the vehicle. For a donation, the title is what counts. As long as your name is on a clear NC title, we can typically accept your car—even if the tags are expired, the inspection is overdue, or the car hasn’t moved in months in North Hills, Garner, Cary, Durham, or Knightdale. Our towing partner picks it up at no cost to you, the title is signed over, and you notify the DMV of the transfer so future responsibility is off your plate.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have a valid North Carolina title
Find your NC vehicle title and make sure your name is listed as the owner and there are no unknown liens. The registration card and license plate can be expired; that’s usually fine. If you’re in Raleigh, Cary, Durham, or anywhere in the Triangle, this title is the key document we’ll need to complete your donation.
2. Tell us about your car with expired registration
Call or fill out our online form with your car’s basic details: year, make, model, where it’s parked, and that the registration has lapsed. Be honest if it doesn’t run or has been sitting in a driveway in Southeast Raleigh, Brier Creek, Apex, or Wake Forest. We don’t require it to pass inspection or be roadworthy.
3. Schedule your free tow anywhere in the Research Triangle
We’ll arrange a professional towing company to pick up your vehicle for free—usually within a few days. You don’t drive the car, so expired tags and inspection don’t matter. Our driver meets you at home, work, or your apartment complex in Raleigh or surrounding suburbs at a time that works for you.
4. Sign the title and hand over the keys and tags
At pickup, you’ll sign the NC title over to Carolina Charities Auto following our simple instructions. You can remove your license plate to return or mail to NC DMV, or ask us what’s recommended. Once we have the signed title, the car becomes our responsibility—not yours—despite any expired registration.
5. Notify NC DMV of the transfer and relax
After towing, you should notify the North Carolina DMV that you’ve sold or donated the vehicle, and handle your plates according to DMV guidelines. This helps prevent future tax or ticket issues. From there, the vehicle is fully in our hands and you no longer have to worry about it sitting with lapsed tags.
6. Receive your tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind
You’ll receive a donation acknowledgment for at least $500 from Heritage for the Blind, and if the vehicle sells for more than $500, you’ll get IRS Form 1098-C to support a higher deduction. The fact that the registration was expired doesn’t reduce your tax benefit, as long as the title transfer is completed properly.
Potential complications to watch for
Title problems matter more than expired registration
Tip: If your NC title is missing, not in your name, or still shows a lien, that can slow things down more than any lapsed tags. Contact us before going to the DMV so we can explain exactly what documentation you’ll need to clear or replace the title for donation.
Abandoned or HOA-controlled parking situations
Tip: If your expired-tag car is parked in an apartment lot, HOA community, or on a Raleigh city street, there may be posted rules. Let us know upfront so we can coordinate towing times and access, and so you can notify a property manager if needed to avoid fines or last-minute complications.
Out-of-state titles or a recent move to Raleigh
Tip: If you recently moved to the Triangle and your car has an expired registration from another state, we can often still take it. The important part is a valid, signed title from that state. Tell us where it’s titled, and we’ll walk you through any special signing or notarization requirements.
