Cancel insurance only after the vehicle has been picked up and the title has been handed off. Use the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date. Cancelling earlier can leave you with an uninsured loss on a car you still legally own, and some states penalize an insurance lapse on a vehicle that is still registered. If a plate or registration step must be handled first, do that before you call your insurer. Then ask about any prorated refund of prepaid premium.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and title hand-off
Make sure the car is no longer in your possession and the title has been properly handed off. Do not cancel based only on a scheduled pickup. If pickup is imminent, keep the policy active until the hand-off is complete. Your insurance change should match the actual pickup/title-transfer date, not the date you first requested the donation or spoke with Carolina Charities Auto.
Handle plates or registration first
Before cancelling, check whether your plate or registration record must be updated first. Some states require plates to be surrendered or registration cancelled before insurance ends. Others allow the insurance change after transfer, with registration updated separately. If you are unsure what applies to your record, contact the North Carolina DMV and follow its order. Do not create an insurance lapse on a still-registered vehicle.
Call with the donation date
Call your insurer after the hand-off is complete. Tell the representative the vehicle was donated and give the pickup/title-transfer date as the requested effective date. Ask for written confirmation of that effective date. If the insurer asks for proof, use the pickup receipt, title-transfer paperwork, or other donation paperwork you received.
Remove or cancel coverage
If this is a multi-car policy, ask to remove only the donated vehicle and keep the rest of the policy active. Confirm the remaining vehicles, drivers, and coverages are still correct. If this was your only car, ask to cancel the auto policy effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. If you plan to drive another vehicle soon, ask about continuous coverage so you do not create a gap.
Request refund and save proof
If you prepaid the premium, ask whether a prorated refund is due under your policy terms. Confirm how it will be issued and where it will be sent. Before ending the call, ask for a confirmation number or written notice showing the vehicle removed or policy cancelled, the effective date, and any refund status. Save it with your donation records.
What to keep in your file
Keep a simple file for the donated car. Include the pickup receipt, title hand-off documents, insurer confirmation, refund notes, and any plate or registration receipt if one applies. Keep the effective insurance date aligned with the donation date. If an agency, insurer, or future buyer question ever comes up, your file should show the same sequence: pickup, title hand-off, plate or registration step if required, then insurance cancellation. Common questions
Can I cancel insurance before pickup if the donation is scheduled?
No. Keep insurance active until the car has been picked up and the title has been handed off. A scheduled pickup is not the same as a completed transfer. If damage, theft, or an accident happens before hand-off, cancelling early can leave you uninsured on a vehicle you may still legally own.
What date should my insurer use?
Ask the insurer to use the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date. That is the cleanest match to when you stopped possessing and transferring the vehicle. Do not use the date you first called about donating unless that is also the actual completed pickup and title hand-off date.
Will I get money back from my premium?
Maybe. If you paid ahead, ask for a prorated refund of any unused premium. The insurer will calculate it under your policy terms and billing status. Confirm the amount, how it will be returned, and when you should expect the credit or payment. Keep the confirmation with your donation file.

Once the vehicle is gone, the title is handed off, any required plate or registration step is complete, and the insurer confirms the change, you can stop paying for coverage on that donated car with a cleaner paper trail.
